MarinaBronMarina Bron is an eighth grader at Swampscott Middle School in Massachusetts.  Her poem, “Turn Off Time“, was selected as a national Top Ten Winner in our Fall 2012 poetry contest held for K-12 students in the United States and Canada.

“This poem was inspired by my grandmother who, as I am growing older and becoming more aware of my surroundings, is starting to change.” Marina explains.  “More recently, she has developed some signs of dementia, yet she refuses to see a professional.  My poem expresses the worry that I feel, but usually do not share with my family or friends.  The biggest worry I have is whether this monstrous disease will completely take over her, devouring the happy-go-lucky person she once was, and turning her into somebody who does not even remember her own granddaughter.”

Marina’s future plans include pursuing an education at an Ivy League school and majoring in Optometry or Pharmaceuticals.  Marina hopes by then this world will have become so advanced technologically that we will have designed a treatment or cure for dementia.
