Poetic Power

A Creative Communication blog

Featured Student Writer: Katie Gergel

IMG_0509Katie has loved to write for as long as she can remember.  Her Aunt (Jessica Treadway) is an author who teaches Creative Writing at Emerson College in Boston.  As soon as Katie was old enough to write, her aunt would bring her bound blank books whenever she would come visit, and Katie would fill them with stories and pictures.

Katie’s poem “Chocolate Covered Pretzels” was selected as a Top Ten Winner in our Fall 2014 national poetry contest. This means that her poem was recognized as one of the ten best poems in the 10-12 grade division out of thousands of entries submitted into the contest.

Katie is a member of her school’s literary magazine.  She is also involved in Physics Olympics and Astronomy Club at her school.  She started playing tennis when she was eight years old, and has played varsity tennis all throughout high school.

In the future, Katie would love to pursue creative writing in college. Her ultimate goal is to be a screen writer or a comedy writer for a show like Saturday Night Live.
